Wynnstay is delighted to announce that Jessica Williams of Dolaugwyn Farm, Bryncrug, Tywyn near Dolgellau, has been named the winner of the 2025 NFU Cymru / Wynnstay Sustainable Agriculture Award.
The award, presented at the NFU Cymru Conference on Thursday 6th November, recognises individuals who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to the economic, environmental, social, and cultural wellbeing of Wales. Jessica was awarded a prize of £500 and a beautifully engraved Welsh slate barometer in recognition of her exceptional contribution to sustainable farming.
Jessica farms in partnership with her husband Hugh, a local vet, and his parents Edward and Marian Williams. Together, they run a thriving mixed enterprise of Welsh Black cattle and Welsh Mountain and Lleyn sheep at Dolaugwyn Farm. The family also manages an additional 30 acres near Harlech, where Jessica’s mother continues to farm organically.
Jessica’s passion for livestock and sustainability is deeply rooted in her upbringing. Her herd of pedigree Welsh Black cattle includes animals from her own Gerrddi Bluog prefix, which she established at the age of 18 with cows gifted by her late father. His influence remains a guiding force in the farm’s ethos, where herd health, efficiency, and environmental responsibility are paramount.
The Williams family operates a closed herd and participates in the Premium Cattle Health Scheme, regularly blood testing and vaccinating livestock to maintain their disease-free status. This rigorous approach has enabled them to export cattle and build strong relationships with buyers both in the UK and internationally. Jessica has also collaborated with research bodies to support rare breed conservation, including the successful calving of a rare Welsh Black using genetics from their own bank.
Environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of the farm’s operations. Dolaugwyn has been involved in environmental schemes since their inception and currently participates in the Habitat Wales Scheme. This includes initiatives such as hedge restoration, fencing, and environmental grazing, all of which contribute to a biodiverse and wildlife-friendly landscape. The farm is home to a variety of pollinators, including honeybees kept by the family.
Jessica is also passionate about community engagement and education. She regularly visits local primary schools to teach children about beekeeping and the importance of pollinators. Inspired by her daughter Sara’s interest in arts and crafts, Jessica has been exploring creative uses for their Black Welsh Mountain wool. Together, they have attended workshops with the Welsh Woolshed and obtained an animal by-products licence from APHA to begin producing leather and sheepskin rugs, reflecting Jessica’s commitment to reducing waste and creating value from local resources.
In addition to producing high-quality, traceable food, the family has diversified into direct meat sales, offering Welsh Black beef through local meat boxes. This initiative reduces food miles and strengthens the connection between consumers and the farm.
Jessica is a Farming Connect Agrisgop Leader and a former NFU Cymru Next Generation member. She is a strong advocate for young people in agriculture, particularly those without a farming background. Her mentorship of a local A-level student over the past two years, providing hands-on experience and guidance, exemplifies her dedication to nurturing the next generation of farmers.
Bryn Hughes, National Sheep & Beef Specialist at Wynnstay, was part of the judging panel and attended the conference to celebrate Jessica’s achievement. He said, Jessica’s passion for sustainable farming, her commitment to herd health, and her dedication to community engagement made her a standout candidate. It was a privilege to be part of the panel recognising her work and impact on Welsh agriculture.
Jessica Williams is a shining example of how innovation, care for the environment, and community spirit can come together to create a truly sustainable farming business. We are proud to support and recognise her work through this award.
Congratulations, Jessica!
